Interactive Sculpture

Ecdysis is an interactive sculpture that explores the processes of healing, care, and becoming through the artist’s own personal story. When visitors place their hand in the personalized plaster cast of her tendon surgery, they can feel the vibration emphasising their focus on their hand while reading the artist’s thoughts of how she processed her accident and the time that followed.
This project emerged in response to personal circumstances and took on new, different and explorative forms over time.

The sculpture became an expression of the artist’s inner conflict between patience, trust, and confidence in her body and the process of becoming or adapting?

While the artist was experimenting with wood carving, she severed a tendon in her finger, which marked the beginning of a new exploration of materials and shifted her focus to a “safer” alternative: bioplastic.

All visible and tangible materials of the sculpture originate from the wood-carving experiments and the tendon surgery, which were later integrated into and encapsulated within experiments with bioplastic. The cast materials such as pads or badanges transformed into a second skin, as the artist’s finger re-created its meaning, appearance and agency back.
