RESEARCH PROJECT _ I am not alone anymore

(WIP Title)

The idea of building her very own rehearsal partner originated from the strong sense of loneliness the dancer felt whilst rehearsing alone in the studio every week for 1.5 years. There was no other body moving with her. It was just her. Deeply inspired by the project The Acrobot by Daniel Simu, she wanted to build a roller-skating robot herself to move with another body.

During the process of building the small robot, the dancer developed an increasing bond with them, which arose the questions about the kinship between humans and machine and about when something or someone becomes ‘alive’.

The robot was programmed based on an AI model that generated a choreographic sequence for a selected piece of music. Through this approach, the dancer explored how the AI’s interpretation of the piece of music and the roller-skating movements generated from it might create and shape the robot’s agency.

In the end, the robot and the dancer both had different choreographies based on the same piece of music and the prompt that it should be a duet.

This research project is in the early stages of development and had its first work-in-progress presentation in May 2026.
